  The   2.99.51  does not have  SFIO  in it at all.a

  That is because the  SFIO  library has its own auto-configuration
  test tools, and they _might_ misbehave in some cases.

  Find in your compilation environment a file called "sfio",  and send
  that to me.

  Lets see..  in  INSTALL  file I give an example:

		CFLAGS="-O -g3 -std1" CC="cc -migrate" ./configure   \
			--prefix=/l/mail  --with-bundled-libresolv   \
			--with-system-malloc
		( DEC OSF/1 at nic.funet.fi  with DECs best compiler.. )

  That is:    CC="cc -migrate"   CFLAGS="-O -g3 -std1"
  might do it.

  I am not entirely sure that this example was used by myself, when
  the system had  sfio  library added in.
