SMTP Time outs

Is there any way in zmailer, save for modifying smtpserver.h, to
manipulate the SMTP timeout value? I get many timeouts from several
listservers (like e.g. brimstone.netspace.org - a quite important one
;-))) for which the standard 20 min. value is not enough.
Could it be possible to add a set of configuration directives to set time
out values for specific servers when needed?
Or perhaps there is a way to do it in the current zmailer release?
