Zmailer install on FreeBSD 2.1-R?

I've gotten Zmailer to successfully compile and install, but now starting
up zmailer gives me a fatal error from smtpserver, claiming that it can't
recognize one of its arguments:

unrecognized option 'a' or somesuch...

the options line it's trying is:

'-asve -l /var/log/mail/smtpserver'

Taking out the whole -asve part made the message go away, but I'd like to
know why this is happening?

Also, things like `zmailer kill' don't work.  They give a message:

exec: ./zmailer: not found

Any ideas?
