I have once done something alike.
At that time the original version of the message in the spool
was manually overwritten with one a lot smaller one.

I am not sure of what exactly happened with your setup.

Latter you reported:

Could you compile with "-g" option added to CFLAGS (if not already,)
and  then:
  gdb ./sm
  (gdb) list *0x2aaaaaf49d1a 

my 64-bit Linux is running F7test3, or thereabouts..
