Legal in some circumstances. Not all, and not this one. Basically,
where you -have- to use an FQDN, you -cannot- use the dot.
Where you can use a non-FQDN, -sometimes- you can use the dot to say
"don't bother trying to look for this in any domains, it's fully
qualified already". I don't know any really good rule.
