How is your home directory protection ? Do you allow group-write ?
If directory protection rules are violated, the .forward file is
tried to be read as 'nobody', which *may* be difficult in case your
directory protection is e.g. '770'; '755' is ok, but group-, nor
world-writability is accepted.
