I have gcc 3.4, and glibc-2.3.* and linux kernel 2.6.5..
but those should not matter. (And I can also be wrong...)

That is most odd thing indeed..

A change exists in the operational environment of the interactive router.
The timeout is in SMTP interaction server not getting a reply back
from the interactive router multiplex server within 60 seconds.
My running system appears like this to Linux "ps axf" command:
21095 ? S 0:05 smtpserver -l /var/log/mail/smtpserver
21096 ? S 0:02 \_ [smtpserver ratetracker subsystem]
21097 ? S 0:00 \_ [smtpserver contentfilter subsystem]
21584 ? S 0:00 | \_ /opt/mail/bin/smtp-contentfilter
21098 ? S 0:08 \_ [smtpserver router subsystem]
21100 ? S 0:36 \_ router -io-i -Ismtpserver
26389 ? S 0:00 \_ router -io-i -Ismtpserver
How does yours ? The process set, and their relationships should
be about equal. The picture above is without any active incoming
SMTP sessions.
The '[smtpserver *** subsystem]' named processes are started during the
initialization of the smtpserver.
Show also output of command:
mailq -M|grep PID|egrep 'SmtpServer|SS.Subsys'
which should list smtpserver -master PID, and those subsys PIDs.
