cluster-ready gauges?

Matti,

speaking about gauges and counters, do you think it makes sense to make
the "counter-keeper" cluster(/farm) ready from the beginning?  Aside
from the fact that it's nice to have aggregated statistics information,
it could be used for such an important thing as keeping
"connections-from-same-ip" counter which is rather important to limit
incoming spam flow.

Explanation: we run a thing here dubbed "SpIn" for "Spam Inhibitor". 
It's a UDP server calculating the rate of incoming "RCPT TO" commands
and suggests delay to the smtpserver (protocol is cloned after whoson). 
For the thing to be effective, it is important to also limit the number
of parallel connections from the same IP, which is currently tricky when
you have multiple machines.

We might have to incorporate "sitewide connection counter" into SpIn but
it won't be neccessary if it'd be a native Zmailer feature...
