  With 2.99.55 (debian package) I can believe this deferring to happen.

  With Wilbert's, Roy's, and my own (cooked up) test addresses,
  I just tried several ZMailer versions in different kinds of machines:

    Linux/i386 RedHat 7.2+updates:  3-Apr-2003 CVS:  "error" -> bounce
    Linux/i386 RedHat RawHide: development CVS: "error" -> bounce
    Solaris 2.6/SPARC,  2.99.56-pre3 18-Sep-2002:    "error" -> bounce

  (ok, if there is differences in e.g. Linux glibc causing observed
   behaviour, that might appear here -- or maybe not.)

  Wilbert said: "We are running Zmailer 2.99.56-pre4 #1 from CVS"

(scratching my head... "..when there are multiple messages in queue..")

  AH! I see it happen. I just had to send two messages immediately
  after each other, first one rejects, second one does stick around
  for some reason.

  Now I know how to repeat it.

     smtp_sync() did yield code 69/UNAVAILABLE (rcptstates = 0x4410)
  ( -> DATASTATE_500 | RCPTSTATE_500 | FROMSTATE_OK )

  Ah, pipeline decoder has the "RSET" verb OK response stuck into
  the status set, and that breaks the status decoding somehow.
