quoted-pair problem

I use zmailer-2.99.27 on AIX 4.1. One of the users here complains
that zmailer does not conform with rfc822/821. Using a backslash
in the envelope address triggs this error message:

mangled address that doesn't obey the RFC822/976 protocol specification.
If you do not recognize the source of the bad header, perhaps you should
contact a Postmaster at your site and ask why your mail was rejected.

Your message is being returned unprocessed.

As I read rfc821 and rfc822 the above address is valid.
