  A very good question.  Your DBTYPE/DBEXT/DBEXTtest appear to be ok,
  but the error report from the GDBM isn't.
  Or if it is, the   sip->file  points to empty string ("", instead of NULL)

  I had similar errors when I did manually alter my  ZENV variables
  to set the mode to gdbm -- and didn't set everything correctly.
  However I also got relation db file name in there giving me a bit
  of a clue to my mistake..

  Lattest code version will print also text version of gdbm_errno, which
  is most educative (got thru my thick skull easily)  :-)
