It should be something more like (note: no *)

.                       smtp!host_to_deliver_to

This is from a production machine (my workstation), so it should work,
except error mails (which get delivered to unreadable local mailboxes).
But I'm running 2.99.49b3 (2.99.43 two days ago); I don't know if there
would be any differences due to versions.
