OK, I have added an entry such as:

press-gopher.uchicago.edu	press-gopher.uchicago.edu

For mail purposes, that's all we're known as to the outside world.  All
the bounced mail has this address in it.  It's really counterintuitive to
require a line like that, since /etc/mail.conf already lists that as the
name of the host and it seems redundant.  In fact, our domain is listed as
'uchicago.edu' in /etc/mail.conf, so even the

press-gopher	press-gopher.uchicago.edu

line seems redundant.  Anyway, I see that not making assumptions like
these and requiring explicit configuration really gives maximum
flexibility (and rope to hang oneself too :-| ) ...
