Sounds like zmailer2.2.e6 is just what you want.
It's basically 2.2 with bug & portability fixes and a new malloc.
Also, transports/mailbox now allows /var/mail to be mode 775.
We ran 2.2 ever since it came out, and upgraded to 2.2e6 recently.
Our only problem with 2.2 were the occasional router core dumps.
ftp.cs.toronto.edu:/pub/zmailer:
zmailer.tar.Z - Rayan's original version 2.2
zmailer2.2.e6.tar.Z - 2.2 plus important bug fixes and SunOS5 support.
