How to configure UUCP via SMTP to a gateway?

I have the following in my db/routes:

.uucp                           smtp!uucp-mail-gw.cornell.edu


Given the address user@trdlnk.uucp, zmailer connects to
uucp-mail-gw.cornell.edu and specifies a recipient of user@trdlnk
(i.e. it drops the .uucp).  Apparently uucp-mail-gw.cornell.edu does
not recognize this as a UUCP address without the .uucp and bounces the
mail.

How can I configure zmailer to retain the .uucp when it forwards the
mail?
